We are now into the third year of offering our show home for people to try before they buy and the popularity is growing all the time. Along the way I have learnt a vast amount about what gives our clients an informative and enjoyable time. Also it is surprising how my ideas of look and taste have gently changed.

I always remember when Vas my lead carpenter and I were talking to the chap from Silent Gliss about brushed stainless steel blinds to go with our brushed stainless steel door and window fittings. Felicity from Lighting Design who was working out the lighting layout for me overheard our conversation and asked if she could have a word. Felicity asked if my wife was involved in the decision making to which I replied ‘No she is far too busy running the family farm’. Felicity said she thought not, and advised me to get a female interior designer on board before Vas and I turned our new oak frame into a lads pad with little warmth.

I am glad to say that Jakki from work came to the rescue and along with the occasional help of an interior designer guided us towards what we now have, and seems to be received so well by all who stay.

My ideas have softened, and have followed our guests’ comments as to what they most appreciate being the light and open space combined with the character and tactile feel of the Oakwrights frame.

One area where ideas have changed is the finish to our windows. Originally we had oak windows with an oiled finish. As the house has mellowed and the oak weather boarding has become a silvery grey colour, with the windows and deck following suit, I just felt that we needed a splash of colour. Jakki and I decided on a sage green colour for the windows and have followed this colour through to some of the garden furniture. I am really pleased with the result and I think it has helped to soften and break the look of the exterior of our home.

Why don’t you come and stay for the night and see what you think?
