It is always good to hear a self build success story and this is exactly what Amanda Philips has achieved with her pretty barn house in Cambridgeshire. Winner of the South Cams LABC Building Excellence Award 2010 is a reward for all the hard work put into this project.

The art of all successful projects is managing to see what others do not notice and Amanda’s plot would have been overlooked by many true professionals. A bit of overgrown unkempt ground 33ft by 250ft it looked anything other than your dream building plot. Amanda had the vision and she bought the ground with no planning, a very brave thing to do.

Oakwrights design team, in liaison with Amanda, carried out the design of a three bedroom barn house which was story and a half in height and 2,020 square feet in floor area. The planning battle was long and prolonged but in the end Amanda achieved her goal and consent was gained.

Following the installation of the slab the oak frame arrived on site and brought the project to life. A full post and beam frame gave a simple structure that touch of character that only an oak frame can. The frame is a classic case of less means more. While not over complicated the frame gives great impact. The build took place at a relaxed pace that allowed plenty of time for the detail to be thought through and the finishes to be of the highest standard.

Following the success of this self build Amanda has now sold the barn house very successfully and is looking to carry out another self build with Oakwrights of course.
