We are now almost through the winter and starting to look forwards to the coming spring time. The April issue of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine has an inspirational article on a house that we built for Sue and Ian Pinks in Kent.

Set on a gently sloping site facing South East, Ian and Sue Pinks house is a stunning hybrid home taking full advantage of its site and outlook.

The most important part of any self build project following the purchase of the plot is the design of your new home. Ian and Sue chose to work with Oakwrights on the design of their home with Darren Blackwell one of our main architectural designers. Darren has a vast amount of experience and fully understands all styles of oak frame from barn house, to traditional to the frame that Ian & sue have which is post and beam.

The house is based on a post and beam design where the oak frame is the principal structure and then there is an external cladding system of render, brickwork and tile hanging. The oak frame is shown externally on large glazed gables and the oak framed sun room. This visible external oak frame work gives a hint of the fantastic frame and space that lie within.

Internally the full post and beam oak frame is visible and gives great character to the interior of the house. The oak frame has been used to define space and the house is mostly laid out in an open plan style.

The house makes the most of the sloping site by the incorporation of a basement below the kitchen wing which houses the plant room and Ian’s office. The basement stretches to 506 square feet or 47 square metres.

On the ground floor you enter through the porch and into the main entrance dining hall which is fully vaulted with oak feature trusses above and has an open fire place. To the side of the hall there is also a downstairs WC. The kitchen and breakfast room form the main living hub of the house with the utility room and access to the basement at the rear.
With a fully glazed gable the kitchen has fantastic views across the plot and beyond. The large sitting room leads onto a fully glazed oak sunroom and a study to the rear. An interesting feature of the study is the glazed studwork which allows borrowed light in from the front of the house. The whole ground floor is light, warm and airy.

On the first floor there are five bedrooms including the master bedroom with en-suite and a family bathroom. The master bedroom is fully vaulted and has a glazed gable with far reaching views.

To the rear of the master bedroom wing is bedroom four. The landing runs along side the fully vaulted hall and to the rear leads onto bedroom five. At the far end of the landing we have bedroom two and three along with the family bathroom and an additional W.C. The landing also incorporates cupboard storage space.
