July Open Day in Kent

Sophia and Andrew’s home is a country house of the Kentish vernacular. The architectural style does not belong to any period and is influenced by the original equestrian property. With its white board exterior and exposed oak frame it melds into the surrounding  landscape harmoniously. The house is a perfect amalgamation of traditional building methods and craftsmanship with an interior look that is classical.

The plot was originally a cottage with stables and 5 acres of land when Sophia approached Oakwrights to design her perfect new home. Planning consent was gained by Oakwrights designer, Darren Blackwell and Sophia embarked on Project Managing the build herself with Oakwrights acting as the main structural contractor.

While Sophia managed the trades from her on-site mobile home, the oak frame took just four days to erect while the house was a little over a year in completion with no major problems. In Sophia’s work as an interior designer, she has many trades people she can call on, which really helped the build process.

Sophia’s home is designed around the use and function of each room. Ensuring that the functional spaces like the kitchen and dining area encourage socialising while the relaxing and entertainment spaces embrace the outdoors allowing a seamless flow in and out of the garden. This is key to good interior design and one of the services Sophia offers her own design clients.

Sophia has been an interior designer for ten years working on projects from one room schemes to project managing an entire house to create beautifully designed, practical living spaces.

Each design scheme is tailored to her clients individual style, and in Sophia’s case, this harks back to her Swedish heritage and a love of light natural materials and white washed woods.  What is apparent in this home is the unique and personal touch each room has, with the relationship of existing furniture and possessions, thoughtfully positioned to work with newly acquired objects in a scheme that does not feel contrived.
