Last weekend was rather hectic. On Friday night I went to a neighbour’s home for their 10th wedding anniversary, which is tin so we took them a watering can! It is an old brick and stone Herefordshire farm house, and I imagine there are some lovely oak timbers in the roof. The party was great and I stayed far too long. So getting up at 4.30 am to travel down to Kent was quite a struggle.

At Benenden we met with Mark Rickwood from Oakwrights, at Sophia and Andrew’s home. It was last summer that I was last on site and the house is really starting to mellow down, with the gardens maturing. The house style has a subtle Scandinavian feel to it, which gives a really light and airy feel to all of the rooms. From the interior of the house you can tell that Sophia is a professional interior designer. Every room just looks beautiful.

Bill, Chris and I left the Oakwrights yard at 5.15am and made such good time that we managed to call in to visit a frame that we have just erected for Steve and Vanessa in Goudhurst. The frame looked great, with large arch brace trusses in the main bedrooms. We looked around the frame for about twenty minutes and then headed off to Benenden.

My favourite thing about the house is how it flows from one open plan area to another. The oak frame helps to define the space and the interior design helps the flow.

Over the day we had twenty four parties visit, and I think all were suitably impressed and gained a lot of inspiration for their own projects. There was one person who had last visited one of our open days over five years ago. David Grey of Oakwrights had visited Justin’s site and they are now, five years later, ready to move forward. This shows just what a long burn process self build can be.

By mid afternoon our last guest had left and it was time for us to head back to Hereford. Meeting all of the visitors and discussing their individual projects gave me a great feeling and I left fully revitalised.

We will be having more open days through the summer so look out for our invitation e-mail.
