Spring Has Finally Sprung in the Oakwrights Garden

Our gardener, Trevor, has been very busy making preparation in readiness for the busy season at our show home. Generally, the garden is low maintenance, but with “no maintenance”, Trevor has had his work cut out! Spring is always a very busy time in the Oakwrights calendar with plenty of shows and events, which generate many leads, which in turn, keep our show home nice and busy.

 

At the start, six weeks ago, all the dead growth from the previous year had to be cleared, by cutting back the pond reeds, trimming the ornamental Yew trees and the shrubs, which in itself has taken over 10 hours and produced 15 bags of waste! (all now on the compost heap). A restraining order on some of the more vigorous growing plants around the borders has lead to some heavy pruning; they have revealed three beautiful roses, which we did not know we had!
 

The Wisteria, with it’s beautiful lilac coloured blossom, has been trained to grow in the right direction with some extra wires for it to climb up and the lawn has been given some tender loving care with the full “feed and weed” treatment and it is now luscious and green once more.
 
Now that the threat of ground frost has past (we hope), we are working on the next phase which is to plant up the garden with new bedding. Filling our stone troughs with Petunias and Lobelia should give us colour throughout the summer. Our garden furniture may be in for a lick of paint too and some new seat pads for our garden love seat should finish off the sitting area a treat.
 
      

 

This week has seen the return of our annual residents, Mr and Mrs Swallow. We love the swallows that set up home under the front porch and rear covered entrance, not to mention their cousins under the glazed gable.  We don’t grumble about their lack of house training, but they make entering and exiting the house quite entertaining if you do not walk gingerly enough!
