Today more and more architects engineers and designers are recognising both the structural qualities of oak and other timbers and their enhancing aesthetic qualities. This has led to an imaginative and innovative use of heavy timbers to enhance both residential and commercial structures.
While many of our buildings are based on traditional oak designs we have also designed or collaborated on a number of highly contemporary designs using oak. One of the best examples is the stunning visitor centre at Caerphilly castle where the oak frame supports an eye catching combination of oak steel and glass. If you have, or are considering, a contemporary design using oak please feel free to discuss your design requirements with Oakwrights ®.
Whilst a full oak frame is unquestionably a thing of beauty it is not an inexpensive way to build. For those who are on a limited budget, but wish to incorporate some oak framing within their house, there is the option of what we term the hybrid. This allows a greater or lesser portion of the house to be built using more cost effective methods, (brick and block or softwood studding) but using oak framing in prominent areas. This allows those on a more modest budget the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of oak even if only on a limited scale.
We have also found that many commercial developers are waking up to the possibilities of oak and the added value that they give to any structure.
