BELOW ARE THE 4 AREAS OF HANDS-ON LEARNING

THE MACHINE SHOP

There is a state-of-the-art 'planer' feeding 2 highly complex CNC beam processing machines, all of which would cost well over a million pounds to replace. Read more about our investments here.

These machines take the digital output from the frame department and cut about 80% of the complex joinery used to joint the timber frames. Because this is automation and not man-hours, we have an extremely efficient system in place yet still do not compromise on the intricacy of the jointing, hand finishing all work.

our advanced machinery accurately cuts most of the complex joinery in our timber frames
Our skilled oak framers finish off the remaining work on the timbers

THE OAK FRAMING SHOP

The output of the Machine shop is fed into the Oak Framing Shop, where a team of skilled Oak framers do the remaining work to the timbers, this can be adjusting the housings and joints, scribing in the curved members, cutting chamfers, and other hand finished embellishments.

This all culminates in the assembly of the Oak frame (the ‘Dry fit’) all the frames, walls, trusses, and roof planes are put together flat to make sure it all fits.

THE ENCAPSULATION SHOP

The third production area is the Encapsulation shop (about to become 2 shops, when our new 24,000 square foot workshop comes on line) Here we take more digital output from the design department, and using another CNC machine assemble the encapsulation (enclosure) systems in frames.

There are three Oakwrights encapsulation systems - the premier Wrightwall Natural system uses the last of our 3 CNC computer controlled machines to fill the panels with recycled cellulose, as the insulation.

THE SITE TEAMS

As you become familiar and competent with the production process you will move to the ‘Make & Take’ phase; this is where you work on the Clients project in production, then join the team who erect the Oak frames and panels on site, some people find the whole erection process very exciting, and opt to move to the site erection teams.  They travel all over the UK (and all the offshore islands too, Isle of man, Chanel islands etc.) erecting frames and enclosing them.  Some people prefer to become ‘Inners and Outers’ doing the ‘Make & Take’

PROGRESSION

All of this hands-on practical experience will give you a unique insight into how the process works, and how the company works, and why everything has to be done to a high standard.  By using your time at the sharp end to observe all the different roles available in the company (while not being under any pressure) you can decide which area might suit you best – and wait for an opening.

We always like to recruit from inside the company and there are a whole range of roles to which you could progress.

These include (but are not limited to – and not in order, but are available within the 2 divisions of the Company):

Frame Designer

Team Leader (production – Encapsulation or Oak Frame)

Project Manager

Production Supervisor

Sales team

Quality manager (production)

Site Team Foreman

Estimating

General Design / Graphics / IT / Marketing

BUSINESS AS A CRAFT

We also recognise that Business is also a craft, and unlike many companies that are run for short term gain, we are planning for the future, planning for the succession, even looking at a 50 year business plan (quite common in German Carpentry Companies)

To this end we have 12 people on a University Diploma programme in leadership and management (which if they hang on for the full 5 years will lead to a Degree in Business Management) The Cohort of 12 has been drawn from a diverse cross section of the company, from an Accounting apprentice, site foreman,  to heads of department. We have sent people to the Cranfield School of Management,  to Construction HNCs / HNDs  CPD and accreditation courses for our Architects and technicians, Chartered status for our Structural Engineer – the list goes on.

unlike many companies, we're planning for success far into the future
we strive to recruit heads of departments and executives internally

MOVING ON

We would always expect to recruit Heads of Departments and Executive Board Members from within the existing pool of employees.

APPRENTICE OPPORTUNITIES

We are also working with the Hereford and Ludlow College to assemble a proper apprenticeship for Heavy Structural Carpentry (Oak Framing) combined with Light Structural Carpentry (panel building)

We currently send apprentice type trainees on the Heavy Structural Carpentry (Oak Framing) NVQ level 2 and 3 run by the Oak frame training Forum.

Until we get our own accredited apprenticeship our trainees do 2 years day release Carpentry and Joinery (level 2 and level 3) at Hereford and Ludlow College (Hereford Tech as was) followed by the Heavy Structural Carpentry (Oak Framing) NVQ.  This takes 4 years to complete.
