Simon & Vicky Parker Open Day

Simon and Vicky’s home was completed just over a year ago and in the short space of time since they moved in, has already started to settle into the surroundings of the rolling Kent countryside.

Designed by Pete Tonks’, one of our architectural designers, the new house sits on the site of an old bungalow set on a plot of around one acre with a south western aspect looking out over the valley to Goudhurst.

Planning was a challenge; but with careful design work by Pete Tonks and a very comprehensive planning application (put together by Vicky, who is a surveyor by profession) success was gained on first submission.

The style of Simon and Vicky’s home could be described as vernacular to the area with a contemporary twist. Externally the house has a rendered ground floor with tile hanging on the first floor, topped off with handmade clay tiles to the roof. The shell of the house is formed with the Oakwrights WrightWall Light and WrightRoof system. This system secures a warm and airtight interior allowing the internal space to flow with an open plan layout.

The oak frame is a cross between post and beam and barn style with a sandblasted finish. The full frame throughout is crowned with a fully vaulted hallway incorporating an arch braced truss and an oak bridge crossing from one wing of the house to the other. One striking feature that does work very well is the addition of the snug off the main sitting room. This area has two large curved braces leading you in and a dragon tie with hip above, creating a very interesting space with low level windows which give a great view down the valley while sitting on the sofa.

In the morning we had the wonderful experience of having clients’ old and new pop in on us: Justin will be receiving his oak frame from us in the late summer, Steve and Vanessa are half way through their build just across the valley and Ed and Avril who we built a home for eleven years ago. This gave all our new acquaintances the opportunity to direct questions, not just at the Oakwrights team, but at experienced self-builders referencing their very own wealth of knowledge.

With thirty five different parties equalling over a hundred people attending through the day we were very busy from start to finish. Simon and Vicky played fantastic hosts and it was great to see the enthusiasm of all the potential self-builders. The open day gave the Oakwrights team a chance to show off a great family home; which at 3,500ft2, four bedrooms and a basement, presented a spacious living area simply but effectively enhanced by the oak frame.
