How to change career path - from Starbucks Manager to Oak Framing
My name's Izzie and I have recently started as an Estimator for Oakwrights. My career as an Estimator didn't start as you would expect. I went to Uni' and studied Photography and following on from that, I jumped straight into a store manager role at a popular coffee chain. With almost 10 years experience of working in retail, starting a career at Oakwrights has been a huge change for me. Now, over a month in, I'm glad I made that change. My previous experience of working with numbers and my knowledge of Oak framed buildings was pretty much zero, however skills from retail, such as organisation, communication and efficiency are all utilised at Oakwrights. New ideas and opinions are always valued and there is always someone to offer any help or advice.
Oak Frame Education
Everything I have learnt so far has come from in-house training at Oakwrights. From understanding how an Oak frame works, to using excel spreadsheets, to basic modelling of buildings on SketchUp. New jobs come in everyday, so there is always a different project to quote for, a different building to draw and a different challenge to take on, which keeps the job fresh and rewarding.
With the workshops just next door, you have the opportunity to see exactly how a frame house is created as well as the chance to go out on site to see finished projects. As an estimator, my job is just the beginning of a connection of people at Oakwrights, who turn client's ideas into real life.
I was looking for a successful company with strong leadership, and a vision to succeed, and I found it.
