An Oak Framed House in Hampshire - A Choice Location

When looking for a location to embark upon a new build, the village of Brockenhurst stood out for Mr & Mrs Nicholls. Situated within the bounds of the New Forest in the county of Hampshire, the village is located near many coastal locations, such as Barton-on-Sea, the larger resort town of Bournemouth, the coastal city of Southampton, and the stunning South Downs National Park.

It is here where Humphrey and Angela Nicholls made the decision to purchase an old, run-down bungalow on a plot with bags of potential. The original building would eventually be demolished to make way for a beautiful new Oakwrights home, bringing the couple from London to a new home in the South West.

The Dream Oak House

Humphrey and Angela knew exactly what they wanted for their dream build, and after making the decision to work with Oakwrights for their oak framed house design, they briefed us to design to their specification: a 3/4 bedroom house, with a jettied glazed gable leading to an upstairs study, an open plan kitchen and dining area incorporating the family living space, a snug leading to a covered external veranda, along with a ground floor bathroom and utility. We collaborated with the couple to make their design a reality, and the exciting process began.

A Complimentary Oak Garage

Due to the nature of the site, we ascertained from early on in the process that the new house was to sit centrally, in order to gain wider access to the oak framed garage and parking areas as well as gaining garden space all around; the external finishes were to combine some classic Hampshire features: Oak feather edged boarding, tumbled red brick with lime mortar and the Oakwrights roof tile blend, to give the impression that it had always been there and to allow the house to remain in keeping with its surroundings. Moreover, the Oak frame post and beam frame were wrapped in Oakwrights WrightWall Natural encapsulation system, designed and manufactured alongside the oak frame in our workshops in Hereford.

Once the build was completed, the Nicholls’ were left with a light and airy open plan home that fuses innovative design with traditional furnishing, in an idyllic location.
