Bespoke Two Bay Garage in Cotswolds conservation area

As part of a renovation project of an 1825 cottage, in a typically beautiful Cotswold village, Nigel commissioned a replacement garage that would house his classic cars and whose style and quality finish would ultimately complement his traditional home.

Choosing to build in oak

With the renovations of Nigel’s traditional cottage including an oak framed porch on the side of the property, oak was an obvious choice for his garage sited just metres away. Nigel looked through Classic Car magazines and came upon our, Oakwrights advert.

With a busy career himself, Nigel appreciated the “excellent pre-contract service from Oakwrights”. Nigel worked with both our Regional Design Consultant James Underwood to design the right garage for his project, and his own Architect, Ashleigh Clarke who we had previously worked with.

Planning was required for the garage as the property is located in a conservation area, however, the process ran very smoothly.” Says Ashleigh.

Nigel's garage design was amended to meet specific plot dimensions and be the perfect home for his classic cars.

Key design Features

“Nigel’s garage is based on our Cotswold garage from our single-storey range being 6 metres deep, however the width was amended to meet specific plot dimensions, which dictated narrower bays than our standard design, but ideal for classic cars.”  Says James Underwood, Oakwrights Regional Design Consultant.

“The garage needed to fit with the traditional Cotswold aesthetic and meet requirements of the planners and the conservation officers.” James continues.

The pitch of the garage roof matches that of the house, at 35 degrees, giving a ridge height of 4.52 metres. The roof height allows for the possibility of installing a lift to store more cars above each other. The roof features Bradstone conservation roof tiles which are regularly used in the Cotswolds. The external material palette also includes larch weather boarding, a brick plinth with oak ledge and brace garage doors that will silver over time and match the oak frame surround.

The garage went up without disturbing the listed stone walls of the neighbouring manor house, a strict condition of the build.

“It is always a pleasure to work with the Oakwrights team, who are professional and produce the beautiful quality of work that we adhere to in our own designs.” Says Architect on the project Ashleigh Clarke

A perfectly Cotswold garage

Nigel’s beautiful cars are fully housed in their new home. “Not only were we really pleased with how we were able to work with Oakwrights during the briefing and design stage, but we were also really pleased to have a garage that is so in keeping with the look and feel of the area.” Says Nigel
