Modern oak frame garden room extension at Herefordshire village home

Sally and Mathew included a single storey oak framed garden room extension as part of a larger house renovation project at their rural Herefordshire home.  With their experienced builder on hand, Sally and Mathew chose an oak frame ‘supply only’ route from us, with the builders erecting their oak frame themselves.

Sally and Matthew chose oak to fit in with the local character of Herefordshire homes

Choosing to build with Oak and Oakwrights

The local village in which Sally and Mathew live is famous for its old black and white houses, with Herefordshire’s traditional oak framing dating back hundreds of years. So, “It felt right to use oak, one of the most traditional of materials in our modern extension.” explains Mathew

“I asked the builder to source an oak structure and he suggested that we use Oakwrights who are based a few miles away from us. Oakwrights designed the frame and the builder followed the detailed plans to ensure the oak frame fitted perfectly onto the plinth.” Continues Mathew

Key Design Features

The brick plinth which forms the base of the garden room continues to form a gable end creating a feature wall on Sally and Mathew’s interior space, whilst the exterior above the brick plinth is clad in weatherboarding, as is the couple’s neighbouring two storey extension. The brick feature wall is also the perfect location for the couple’s TV and creates a hub for their seating area.

Dual aspect windows set within the oak frame allows views out both sides over Sally and Mathews garden and the surrounding countryside from the inside, and also enables views through the extension from the confines of the garden out into the fields, reducing the visual impact of the building.

The oak roof truss placed at the halfway point of the vaulted roof really adds character and warmth to the room whilst maintaining the contemporary feel that Sally and Mathew wanted.

A great family room!

Mathew and Sally used natural materials including clay bricks, stone flooring and an oak frame to their best advantage, creating a modern space using a traditional material palette.

“Building work started in March 2019 and we were finished by the September. We really enjoy the extra space that the garden room provides and it forms a great family room as well as a space to entertain friends and family.”
