John Williams is a specialist in the design of the inimitable home. With consideration taken for traditional building materials and construction techniques, John's designs take care to contemplate light, aspect, proportion, scale, texture and context. As part of the Oakwrights Architectural Design Team for more than ten years, John is fully conversant with the company's systems and construction methods, ensuring a smooth process throughout your use of oak frame.

John gained his 'MA Cantab' in architecture from Cambridge University in 1997, working for several years after graduation at an architectural practice based in the city. In 2003, John moved to Herefordshire to work for a company that specialises in the repair and conservation of historic buildings, where he was involved in projects for both English Heritage and The National Trust. Both these jobs gave him a good grounding in the use and detailing of traditional materials and techniques, including oak framing, lime mortars and renders, as well as period joinery and glazing.

Having enjoyed combining the design skills with 'hands on knowledge of the construction processes, John went on to complete a two year course in cabinet making. During this time he designed and started building a traditionally jointed oak framed building in woodland he owns, using timber and other materials sourced from the site and as locally as possible.

Since joining the Oakwrights Design Team in 2003, John has been using these experiences to guide selfbuilders from all over the country; from conception of project to planning negotiation, from gaining planning permission through to the construction of your unique home. John's track record is second to none.

The wonderful plot of land acquired by these clients lay within the walled garden of a country house in Worcestershire. After the initial transformation of a stagnant pond into a live pool, John was put to task to design the contemporary oak-frame home that echoes the curve of the pool.

Accessed from an impressive oversized hallway the downstairs reception rooms are spacious and bright, taking advantage of the extraordinary setting, with glazed aspects toward the pool and gardens beyond. On the first floor, a top-lit half-galleried landing provides a home for a substantial library and leads to five spacious bedrooms, two of which boast en-suite facilities.

Oakwrights Architectural Designers were introduced to these clients with the style of house required, already placed firmly in their minds. John's task with this very individual home was to produce a design that would suit particular requirements, quite specifically to accommodate a young family.

The main body of the house is a storey and a half with three large bedrooms on the first floor. The vaulted family room and kitchen are the main focal points and are where the family spend most of their time. The full size basement below the house accommodates a luxurious home cinema and a children's play room.
